Join us for a kick-off reception for the week-long showcase featuring the entrants of the Pop-Up Place design and build competition. These fun and engaging pieces of street furniture, modular sculptures, and large-scale games are meant to activate public spaces and bring the community together in creative ways.
The opening party is on April 8 from 6:00-8:00 PM. Enjoy entries from Learning Landscape Design, LLC, Go By Bike, Sea Mason, and PBOT's Block Party Team.
The pieces will be on display in the Portland City Hall Atrium from April 8–12.
Showcase your designs for temporary urban street furniture, modular sculpture, or large-scale games as part of the Portland Bureau of Transportation’s (PBOT) Design Week competition.
Entrants will be on display at Portland City Hall during Design Week. Designs will be voted on by members of the public and highlighted by City Hall and PBOT through various social media channels. The winning People’s Choice Award will also earn a stunning trophy designed by Felling Furniture Studio.
This is a design and build competition. PBOT is looking for fun and engaging pop-up pieces that provide temporary large-scale games, modular sculpture, or street furniture that activate public spaces and bring the community together in creative ways. The competition is spearheaded by PBOT’s Portland in the Streets program which honors the positive impact urban placemaking has on civic life.
Design entries should:
Be safe for public use unsupervised; Be able to be installed and removed in under an hour with the use of few, if any, basic tools; and Be able to pack flat or nested, or fit into a rolling container for easier storage
Entrants must supply all materials used for the competition. Branding is limited to 1 foot by 1 foot.
After the competition, entries may be donated to PBOT’s Portland in the Streets Program to be used during community events or to be formally adopted by neighborhood organizations. Select entrants will be invited to display their creations for use during 2019 Portland Sunday Parkways, Last Thursdays on Alberta, block parties, and large community events. Portland Sunday Parkways is committed to creating a special display area or to utilize the objects in a manner that best highlights their innovation and interactivity.
