Festival registration is open! Design Week 2020 runs virtually from August 3-7.
Designer Amy L. Frazer, has teamed up with Spin Laundry Lounge and the non-profit Modify Style to teach you how to customize, mend and extend the life of your clothes with style in this hands on workshop.
Express Yourself is part modern embroidery workshop and part clothing swap. Participants come in with their favorite, perhaps well worn clothing, and leave with a wearable stitched work of art. We’ll discuss why mending matters, expressing yourself through stitching, the importance of making your clothing last longer and ways to extend the life of your clothing, keeping it out of the landfill.
In this workshop participants will learn the basics of embroidery, use their sketchbook, iPad or computer to design their own image and learn how to translate it into stitches. Amy will share simple stitching methods used for generations. Think pioneers with iPads and transfer paper. Each participant will leave the workshop with a sewing kit that includes a stitch guide, practice fabric, hoop, Solvy Water Soluble Stabilizer, blank patches to customize, needles, embroidery threads, and a few more goodies as well as the ability and confidence to continue sewing adventures at home.
The workshop will begin with Modify Style giving a brief keynote about who they are and what they do. They will facilitate a clothing swap, so bring any unwanted, gently used clothing to swap with each other or donate to PPS Clothing Closet and Union Gospel Mission. They’ll also take this opportunity to share ideas for fashion/designer submissions for the next Modify Style.
The owners of Spin Laundry Lounge will give an overview of their washing technology and bit of education about how to care for your clothing and extend the life of it through proper washing and care, sustainability facts and the lifecycle of clothes.
Drinks and Snacks will be available. Why not bring a load of laundry to do while you’re stitching with us!
Clothing collected at the swap left at the end of the workshop will be donated to PPS Clothing Closet and Gospel Union Mission. Larger clothing donations are welcome, too.
Are you a student or simply can’t afford the workshop fee? E-mail us and we’ll be glad to lend a helping hand with a discount code.
